Chapter Twelve
FINN STRETCHED, body tense, toes pushing against a tiny foot chip to drive them to their maximum wingspan. Their fingertips brushed the hold above them, just barely catching the lip. They wriggled, searching for just a couple extra centimeters of distance, enough to get the pads of their fingers onto the plastic hold and pull.
The tension eased as they hauled onto the hold. They exhaled a sigh of relief as they continued up the climb. That was probably the hardest move, at least for them. Some of the guys whoâd gone before them had jumped for it, but Finn preferred to approach things statically if they could, and they often had the length to make that happen.
The rest of the qualifier climb gave them little trouble. They reached the top without incident and turned to ensure the judges gave them credit for the send. Then they let go, allowing the belayer on the ground to lower them back to the padded stage.
Ty gave them a nod as he stepped up to do the climb Finn had just finished. Heâd almost certainly just jump for the hold, but he was a much more dynamic climber than Finn would ever be.
Finn collapsed in a plastic chair in the meantime. They had five minutes to rest and recover before they had to try the other qualifier climb, but they werenât particularly stressed about it. Jude was currently sailing up that climb, moving slow and controlled even though it was clear he could zip up the thing. It wasnât worth making a mistake in this early round, especially for someone like Jude who often got into finals just on the cusp of the cut off.
Finn sat back to watch him. His arms flexed as he made a powerful lunge upward. His blue Team USA tank top showed off his shoulders and just a hint of lats and back muscle as he ascended. Even knowing theyâd probably see all of him later tonight, that tiny peek proved an enticing and effective tease. Finn couldnât tear their eyes off Jude as he climbed, to the point that they actually blinked in surprise when he reached the top.
Shit. Finn jerked to their feet. They had to do the climb once Jude returned to the mats, but theyâd been so busy daydreaming about the guy scaling that wall that theyâd almost forgotten where they were. How was Jude already having that kind of effect on them? Them hooking up in Seoul had been one thing, but now that Jude was back, this thing had reached a whole new level of intensity.
In a way, they were only following their instructions from their coaches. They ate every meal together, trained together ⦠slept together. Okay, so that last one wasnât really what Team USA or Team Canada had had in mind, but it wasnât negatively impacting the first two things. If anything, Finn was climbing more relaxed and free than they had in a long while in a competition setting.
